Late Victory Leads UC Davis Over Stanford

Wrestling team falls to 0-8.

DAVIS, Calif.- Aggie Senior Mike Roper's victory at 190 pounds helped lead the UC Davis wrestling team to a 23-15 victory over Stanford University Friday night in Hickey Gym. With the loss, Satnford's 15-match win streak over the Aggies comes to an end. Davis improves to 6-7, while Stanford fell to 0-8.

Stanford led 15-13 heading into the 190-pound bout before Roper exploded in the first period recording three takedowns against Tim Kendall. Roper continued his dominance in the second period with two takedowns and two three-point near falls to raise the bout score to 16-4. The third period proved to be the same as Roper had an additional two takedowns and ended the bout with a 20-8 victory.

Rudy Ruiz gave Stanford an early lead, winning the 118-pound boout by a major decision, 16-2. David Yi tied the team score, 4-4, with a 13-3 major decision over Levi Weikel-Magden at 126. The Aggies took their first lead of the match after the 134-pound bout when Mike Collier defeated Jason Talbott, 7-5.

Stanford, however, responded in the 142-pound and 150-pound bouts to claim an 11-7 lead before Adrian Garcia defeated Doug Bardsley (158), 6-4. David Cobb regained the lead for Davis with 6-2 victory over Shane Cross to put the Aggies on top 13-11. Stanford again bounced back as Scott Chapman earned a major decision over Ryan Hutfless, 14-4, to give the Cardinal a 15-13 advantage heading into the 190-pound bout.

UC Davis added six more team points after Stanford forfeited the 275 pound match to end the match.
