Ames, Iowa -
Pushing #3 Iowa State to the final match, Stanford could not quite come up with a huge upset of the Cyclones. With national champion Matt Gentry (157) out of the lineup due to sickness, the Cardinal wrestled two of their strongest duals of the season, defeating Lock Haven 22-15 and falling to Iowa State 23-18. Stanford was forced to forfeit at the 157 pound weight in each dual, giving their opponents six team points.
In the afternoon match, the Cardinal took down the Bald Eagles from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. With the dual on the line, Stanford entered the final match up only 18-15. Heavyweight Shawn Ritzenthaler stepped up to the task and delivered a major decision featuring two near falls to give the Cardinal the 21-15 victory, their fourth dual victory of the season
The teams traded decisions through the first four matches. After Nathan Peterson (125) lost a sudden victory match, Juston Johnson (133) took down Lock Haven's Jim Collins three times for the 9-5 win. Chris Hayworth (141) likewise scored a decision, but freshman Josh Zupancic (149) had his match snatched from him when Joshua Medina scored a takedown with only eight seconds left. Stanford forfeited at 157 pounds and had to battle uphill. Scott Loescher (165) scored a 5-4 decision and then Imad Kharbush (174) pinned Carlos Ponce at 2:27 to give the Cardinal a lead they would not surrender. Mike Metzger defeated Ian Bork (197) to keep the dual close, but Ritzenthaler put it away in the final match.
In a match-up against one of the premiere names in college wrestling, Stanford came agonizingly close in their 23-18 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones. The evening match was once again decided in the final match, with the Cardinal coming up just short. Iowa State's Scott Coleman, ranked ninth in the nation, defeated Shawn Ritzenthaler
in an 8-2 decision, as the heroic heavyweight could not quite deliver Stanford the upset.
Josh Zupancic vindicated his earlier loss in the closing seconds by reversing Jason Knipp with only 26 seconds left to win the 3-2 decision. Nathan Peterson (125) also won early, but Stanford's forfeit at 157 pounds hurt them once again, putting them in a 16-6 hole. Three straight wins actually gave Stanford the lead for a moment. Decisions by Scott Loescher and Ryan Hagen (184) sandwiched another pin by Imad Kharbush, who took down David Bertoline in only 2:11. Ahead 18-16, the Cyclones talented upper weights came up with two huge wins in the last two matches to take the dual. Competing against four top-ten ranked wrestlers in the line-up with star Matt Gentry out, the Cardinal can build on the excellent effort.
The split duals leaves the Cardinal with a 4-3 dual record this season. They wrestle again on Sunday against Cal State Bakersfield, the first of eight duals against Pac-10 opponents.
Notes: In an exhibition match against Lock Haven, Ray Blake (149) defeated Seth Martin in a 7-5 decision ... Matt Gentry was out of the lineup again, recovering from illness ... Stanford's next home match is on February 4, 2005, against Fresno State.
