SAN FRANCISCO - The 20th-ranked Stanford wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts in a 25-12 win at San Francisco State, Friday, at the Swamp in San Francisco. The Cardinal improves to 7-5 overall, while the Gators drop to 3-5 on the season.
Sophomore Garrett Schaner got things going for the Cardinal with a fall in 2:22 over Vicente Aboytes at 157 pounds. It was the second fall of the season for Schaner, who moves to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in duals, and it gave Stanford the early 6-0 lead in the dual.
The Cardinal extended its lead to 9-0 as redshirt sophomore Bret Baumbach recorded a 2-0 decision over SFSU's Isaiah Jimenez, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the Division II polls. After a scoreless first period, Baumbach scored an escape in the second and secured 1:54 of riding time. Baumbach improves to 6-8 overall this season and 3-2 in duals.
At 174 pounds, junior Kyler Hasson wrestled in place of Stanford senior Nick Amuchastegui. Wrestling up a weight, Hasson dropped a 6-1 decision to Arman Ostadsharif. He falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in duals.
Junior Spence Patrick added to the Stanford lead with an 11-3 major decision over Zach Jimenez at 184 pounds. Patrick tallied four takedowns, an escape, a stalling point and 1:57 of riding time in the win. Tying his season high with his fourth straight victory, he moves to 13-9 overall and 9-3 in duals.
Sophomore Alan Yen increased the dual score to 16-3 in favor of the Cardinal with a 10-4 decision over Thomas Martin at 197 pounds. Yen collected four takedowns, an escape and 2:08 of riding time to improve to 8-11 overall and 6-5 in duals this season.
Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer registered a 5-0 decision over Anthony Gonzalez to push the Stanford lead to 19-3. He is now 17-8 overall and 10-2 in duals. San Francisco State cut the lead to 10 as Stanford forfeited at 125 pounds.
Junior Ryan Mango
, ranked eighth in the nation at 133 pounds, posted a 3-0 decision over Julian Perez. After two scoreless periods, Mango scored a takedown in the third period and secured 3:25 of riding time for the victory. He leads the team with 21 wins this season and remains undefeated in duals at 12-0.
True freshman Alex Manley earned his second win of the season and his first in a dual with a 4-2 decision over Daniel Flores at 141 pounds. The win brought the dual score to 25-9 in Stanford's favor.
In the final bout of the night, true freshman Josh Lauderdale fell to SFSU's Dylan Phillipy, 7-3, at 149 pounds. It brought the final dual score to 25-12.
Stanford will have a quick turnaround as it plays host to Southern Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 21. The teams will square off at the San Diego Sports Courts in the Ford Center on the Stanford campus at 1 p.m.
