Stanford Lands Four On U.S. Men's Water Polo Team

Four former Stanford men's water polo standouts will represent the United States at the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer, as USA Water Polo announced the U.S. Olympic Men's Water Polo Team Monday. Three-time National Player of the Year and four-time All-American Tony Azevedo `05 will captain the U.S. squad, while Layne Beaubien `99 makes his second Olympic appearance, Peter Hudnut `03 makes his debut as a full-time player after serving as an alternate in 2004, and Peter Varellas `06 also makes his Olympic debut in Beijing.

Three Stanford athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team when the selections were announced today. Senior Tanner Gardner of the wrestling team, senior Sandy Hohener of the men's water polo team and senior Dylan Carney of the men's gymnastics team were three of the nation's 15 first-team honorees.

Four Stanford athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large Teams when the selections were announced earlier this week. Tanner Gardner of the wrestling team, Sandy Hohener of the men's water polo team and Dylan Carney of the men's gymnastics team were first-team picks on the men's at-large list for District VIII, while Elaine Breeden of the women's swimming team was a District VIII Second Team pick on the women's side.

The Stanford men's water polo team, long a dominant program in the pool, was lauded on Monday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for being the most dominant program in the classroom, claiming the top team grade-point average in the nation (3.34) and landing nine student-athletes on the Academic All-America list.

Four Stanford student-athletes have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, awarded to fall sports participants who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500. Neftalem Araia (men's cross country), Rachel Buehler (women's soccer), Sandy Hohener (men's water polo) and Arianna Lambie (women's cross country) represent Stanford among the 58 NCAA student-athletes (29 men and 29 women) honored for the award. Stanford's four selections are the most of any institution included among the awardees.
