STANFORD, Calif. -
Freshman Alex Bowen of the Stanford men's water polo team was named MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Bowen scored 11 goals during Stanford's 4-0 run to the SoCal Tournament title, including six in the 10-9 overtime title-game win over No. 3 California.
Bowen's sixth goal of the final served as the tournament clincher, as he netted the winner with 42 seconds remaining in the overtime session. Earlier Sunday, the Cardinal (7-2), which entered the tournament ranked fourth in the nation, had upset top-ranked USC, 6-4.
In Saturday's wins over No. 14 Princeton and No. 5 Pepperdine, Bowen netted five goals total. He opened the day with two goals against Princeton then bagged a hat trick in the 7-6 win over the Waves.
Stanford opens its 2011 home slate this Friday night, Oct. 7, hosting Pepperdine at 7 p.m. at Avery Aquatic Center.
