Sept. 21, 2009

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's water polo utility Drac Wigo was named MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week Monday following a stellar weekend in which he scored 17 goals over No. 2 Stanford's perfect 4-0 run to the NorCal Invitational championship.

The announcement marks the second time in Wigo's career, and first time this season, that the senior from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. has been honored with the conference's weekly award.

Wigo opened up the weekend with three goals in the Cardinal's tournament-opening 16-3 victory over UC Davis, then completed his day with an incredible eight-goal effort in Stanford's 15-9 victory over No. 7 Pepperdine.

He would begin Sunday's action with two goals against No. 3 California in the semifinal round Sunday afternoon, including the Cardinal's opening goal of the contest. His goals, as well as the constant threat he played on the perimeter helped open up the Cardinal offense in its 8-7 win as seven different Stanford players found the back of the cage.

In the tournament's championship game, Wigo posted his third hat trick of the weekend, scoring four goals in Stanford's 6-5 victory over UCLA. That performance featured Wigo scoring Stanford's second goal to give the Cardinal an early 2-0 lead, then, when the Bruins fought back to even things up at 3-3, Wigo accounted for three straight Cardinal goals to open up a 6-3 lead that would hold to give Stanford the title.

Wigo and the Cardinal will next see action against the same UCLA Bruins squad it defeated Sunday, hosting the Bruins Saturday, Oct. 3 at a time to be announced.
