SHENZHEN, China - After Friday night's opening ceremonies, the 2011 World University Games are in full swing in Shenzhen, China. Saturday in China, Stanford athletes were in action as U.S. men's water polo suffered its first loss in group play and U.S. men's volleyball stayed unbeaten with a sweep of Turkey.
Men's Volleyball
The U.S. team, featuring Erik and Kawika Shoji and Brad Lawson, improved to 2-0 in Group D play with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-20) sweep of Turkey.
Kawika Shoji handed out 26 assists in the win, while Lawson recorded three kills and a block. Erik Shoji recorded four digs.
Men's Water Polo
The U.S. dropped to 1-1 in Group C play Saturday in China, falling to Serbia by an 8-2 score.
The American offense struggled against the Serbian defense, being held off the scoreboard until scoring twice in the final period. By that time, Serbia had built a 7-0 advantage through the first 24 minutes.
Janson Wigo and Sage Wright accounted for the two U.S. goals. Jeffrey Schwimer made a steal on defense while Drac Wigo made three attempts on net but was unsuccessful at finding the back of the cage.
The U.S. returns to action Monday against France at 11:20 a.m. local time (7:20 p.m. PT Sunday evening).
