2010 ACWPC All-America Teams
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's water polo standouts Jeffrey Schwimer, Jacob Smith and Sage Wright were all honored over the weekend by being named to the ACWPC All-America Second Team.
The trio were crucial parts of the 2010 Cardinal squad that finished the season 15-8 and reached the final of the MPSF Championship.
Schwimer, a Beverly Hills, Calif. native, earned his second straight All-America honor, having been named honorable mention by the ACWPC last year. In 2010, the Cardinal two-meter man tied for second on the team with a career-high 33 goals. The senior scored three times in Stanford's run to the MPSF title game, including scoring the eventual game-winner in the Cardinal's 8-7 quarterfinal victory against UC Irvine.
Coronado, Calif. native and driver Jacob Smith, also an ACWPC All-America honorable mention a year ago, earned his second-team selection thanks in part to a team-leading 54 goals as Stanford's go-to scorer. That tally marked a new career-best for Smith, a junior who scored 37 goals in 2009. Smith scored seven goals at the MPSF Championship, fueling the Cardinal's upset of No. 1 California in the semifinal round and helping carry the Cardinal into sudden-death against USC in the title game before the Cardinal fell, 8-7.
In his redshirt fifth year, Wright finished fourth on the squad with 32 goals and earned his third All-America nod. Following the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Wright was named to the ACWPC All-America First Team. In 2010, Wright returned from a knee injury that forced him to sit out 2009, giving the Cardinal another perimeter marksman who added goals in Stanford's upset of No. 1 California in the MPSF Championship semifinals as well as in the title game against USC.
All three Cardinal players earned All-MPSF honors in late November, as Schwimer was named to the first team with Smith and Wright earning second-team nods.
