Stanford Loses in Finals of MPSF Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The number four-ranked University of Southern California men's water polo team earned a birth in next week's NCAA Championships with an exciting 5-4 victory over Stanford in the championship game of the 1997 MPSF men's water polo championships on Sunday afternoon at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
The Trojans jumped on top early, scoring three goals in the first quarter. Stanford scored two goals in the third quarter to cut into a 4-1 USC lead. The teams exchanged goals in the final stanza to lead to the 5-4 final.
Layne Beaubien scored two goals and Brian Heifferon and Crosby Grant scored a goal a piece for the Cardinal.
Stanford concludes the season at 19-7.
