No.4 Water Polo Team Defeats No.5 UC Irvine
Stanford, Ca. - The fourth-ranked Stanford water polo team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to post a 6-5 victory over fifth-ranked UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match on Friday at deGuerre Pool.
UCI's Michael Foley scored the game's first two goals, before Stanford tallied six straight times. Layne Beaubien and Arturo Rodelo each scored two goals to pace the Stanford attack.
UCI cut margin with 1:58 with play on Foley's third goal, but Stanford held on for the win.
Chris Aguilera collected eleven saves for Stanford, while Tom Davis collected eight saves for the Anteaters.
Stanford raised its record to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF. UC Irvine fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Stanford hosts the Nor Cal Invitational this saturday and sunday. Sixteen of the nation's top 20 teams will be competing.
