IRVINE, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford men's water polo got a combined 23-goal assault from 10 different players Sunday as the Cardinal cruised past Redlands with a 23-5 victory at the UCI Invitational in Irvine.

The Cardinal finished the weekend 2-0 and will return to action in two weeks, taking part in the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley over the weekend of Sept. 18-19.

Junior Jacob Smith led Stanford's 10 goal scorers with five on the day, while Ryan Brown notched four and Alex Avery three to round out the Cardinal players with hat tricks. Porter Kalbus, Ryan Kent, Peter Sefton and Sage Wright each scored twice, while Tim Norton, Paul Rudolph and Jeffrey Schwimer each added a goal.

For the weekend the Cardinal outscored its two opponents by a combined 38-8 margin.

Brian Pingree and Hunter Ploch once again each handled a half of action Sunday. Pingree started the contest and stopped six shots while Ploch made four saves in the second half.

The Cardinal led 3-1 after the opening period, and made its move in the second frame, scoring six unanswered goals to go up 9-1 at the break.

Seven Stanford goals in both the third and fourth periods widened the divide between the Cardinal and Bulldogs as the Cardinal rolled to its second straight win to open the 2010 season.
