Introduction
Since its inception in 1985, the NCAA's Youth Education through Sports
(YES) program has reached an unprecedented level of popularity. Each
year, YES clinics, held at selected NCAA championships serve nearly
10,000 youth ages 10 to 18 who engage in fun and challenging sports-skill,
life skill and conditioning sessions conducted by top collegiate coaches
and student-athletes. Parents have the opportunity to discuss with clinic
staff issues regarding youth sports such as nutrition, sportsmanship,
college recruiting, compliance and eligibility and injury prevention.
YES clinics annually
attract the best and brightest coaches and student-athletes who are
dedicated to teaching and caring for youth. YES is another way that
coaches and student-athletes share the NCAA's commitment to challenging
young people to strive for higher levels of achievement in both athletics
and academics.
The YES program
began during the 1985-86 season with clinics at the Women's Final Four
and the NCAA track and field championships. Each year, YES clinics have
grown in number and participation by youth. Clinics are slated annually
at championship sites that include football, softball, basketball, soccer,
baseball, lacrosse, track and field, volleyball and field hockey. Several
clinics offer participants the chance to also attend the NCAA championship
at the clinic site at no cost to the participants.
The Connection
YES clinics succeed because of teamwork. Collegiate coaches and student-athletes
from around the country are brought in to help participants learn and
practice sports and mental skills development. In addition, local high
school/club coaches and other individuals from the community assist
in reinforcing YES objectives and the overall operation of the clinic.
Through hands-on
sport-specific sessions that cater to the developmental level of each
participant, coaches and student-athletes provide young people with
the fundamental tools they need to practice their sport. Through a focus
on elements of sports such as discipline, confidence and commitment,
these youths will be able to apply what they learn in athletics to other
areas of their lives. Participants also will have the chance to practice
the skills that encourage them to make the right choices in sports,
as well as the right choices in life. Coaches and student-athletes,
because of their visibility and success on the fields and courts, are
held in high esteem by youth aspiring to improve their sports and life
skills. Coaches provide the respected leadership and skill expertise
that each participant needs. In turn, student-athletes strengthen their
leadership abilities, reaffirm values, reflect on their athletics experiences
and enjoy participating in a program that challenges them to communicate
with others. Thus, coaches and student-athletes become a vital link
in the YES equation.
Bringing it all
together
The NCAA corporate partner program represents a commitment by selected
national corporations and others toward supporting intercollegiate athletics
and NCAA promotional activities. Corporate partners provide the resources
for instructional equipment, T-shirts, printed materials and promotional
items thus enabling the NCAA to offer YES clinics to participants at
no cost. In addition, they are dedicated to assisting the NCAA in showcasing
the positive aspects of participation in collegiate athletics and providing
young people with the opportunity to experience a variety of sports
activities and develop the skills and knowledge that can afford them
a healthy lifestyle.
The NCAA also recognizes
the importance of reaching parents and youth coaches. During each YES
clinic parents and coaches have opportunity to discuss with clinic staff
issues regarding youth sports such as coaching, nutrition, sportsmanship
and injury prevention. Additional topics relative to recruiting and
admission requirements for collegiate student-athletes are also discussed.
Get Involved
More clinics are being added each year which result in larger numbers
of participants. A YES clinic may be scheduled for your community. Registration
is limited and reserved for youth ages 10 to 18. A parent or guardian's
signature is required for insurance purposes; therefore, enroll early
to guarantee participation. Interested individuals can also volunteer
to serve as local event planners or clinic day workers. Volunteerism
is an essential element of the YES program. Don't pass up a golden opportunity
to join the NCAA in reaching out to our future collegians.
