Spencer McLachlin, a 6'6'' outside hitter from Punahou High School came to the Farm as one of the most sought after recruits in the nation for 2007.
"Spencer has the total package, good size, great ball control, great presence at the net and he plays good defense. We will be looking for Spencer to have an immediate impact on our team," says Kosty.
He is a three time State Championship MVP, 2006 State Player of the Year, a three time All-American at Junior Nationals, and a starter for the 2004 and 2005 USA Boys Youth National Team and the 2006 USA Men's Junior National Team. Spencer was a key figure on the 2004 Youth National team, which became the first-ever USA boy's squad to earn the gold medal at the NORCECA Championships. In earning the first place finish, his team qualified for the 2005 World Championships. Last summer Spencer participated in the 2007 World Championships.
Away from volleyball, McLachlin is also a top scholastic basketball player earning All-State recognition three times at Punahou. "Spencer is a great combination of size, skill, and winning attitude that all programs seek in recruiting impact volleyball athletes. Add to that his extensive international experience and you've got a real gem of a player," says assistant coach Ken Shibuya.
Coach Kosty has high hopes for the Hawaiian native, praising him as being one of the best volleyball players in the country as well as having great "integrity, character, and personality" as well.
McLachlin is one of four Stanford players from Hawaii. The others include Kawika Shoji, Max Holverson, and Jordan Inufuku.
