STANFORD, Calif. - The 2011 World University Games will get underway this week, covering competition in 34 sports and disciplines from Aug. 11-23 in Shenzhen, China. Stanford will be well-represented at the Games, as 26 athletes and four coaches will represent four countries over seven sports.
Current and former Cardinal athletes and coaches will participate in women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, taekwondo, men's volleyball, and men's and women's water polo.

Due to the time difference between the West Coast of the United States and Hong Kong (16 hours), GoStanford.com will be issuing daily updates each morning beginning Thursday, August 11. Recaps on GoStanford.com will include spoilers for events which may potentially be aired on a tape-delay basis.
Competition begins Thursday in China as the men's water polo tournament gets underway. The United States begins play against Singapore at 3 p.m. local time (9 p.m. PT Wednesday night).
Men's water polo is in Pool C of its competition along with Singapore, Serbia and France. On the women's side, the U.S. is in Pool B with Australia, France, Mexico and Russia. The U.S. women will open play Friday, Aug. 12 against Australia.
The women's basketball tournament will run from Aug. 14-21. The United States, placed in Pool D, opens play against Hungary on Sunday, Aug. 14.
The U.S. men's volleyball team will play in Pool D in preliminary play along with the Czech Republic, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The competition runs from Aug. 12-22, with the U.S. opening pool play Friday, Aug. 12 against Mexico.
The swimming competition at the World University Games is set to take place from Aug. 14-19. The taekwondo program will run from Aug. 18-23.
