STANFORD, Calif. - The sixth-ranked and defending national champion Stanford men's volleyball team closed out the 1998 regular season schedule with a 3-1 (15-0, 15-2, 14-16, 15-8) victory over UC Santa Cruz at Burnham Pavilion. With the win, the Cardinal improved to 15-7 on the season.
After decisive victories in the first two games, which took just 37 minutes to complete, the Cardinal went to the bench and by the end of the match, all but two players registered playing time. In the end, 12 different players posted at least one kill, led by freshman middle blocker Brett Youngberg's match-high 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Patrick Klein hit a match-high .636 (7-0-11). Senior middle blocker Adrian Sosa led UCSC with 12 kills.
The Cardinal return to action next week as it begins defense of its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in the MPSF Tournament - first round site, time and opponent to be announced. The MPSF champion will receive an automatic bid to the Final Four.
