Men's Volleyball Sweeps UC San Diego




March 6, 1998

SAN DIEGO - The 7th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of UC San Diego to improve to 9-3 overall and 8-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Sophomore outside hitter Andy Witt (Santa Ynez, CA/Santa Ynez HS), who currently leads the nation in kills per game (7.41), paced the Cardinal offensive attack with 14 kills while hitting .429 (14-5-21). Freshman middle blocker Brett Youngberg (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park Secondary), making his first start of the season, tallied 10 kills while hitting a team-leading .529 (10-1-17). Senior middle blocker Tad Hoffman (Hanford, CA/Hanford HS) dominated at the net, recording 12 blocks. The Tritons combined for just seven blocks individually and four as a team. With the loss, UCSD dropped to 2-12 overall and 0-11 in the conference.

Stanford wraps up the two-match road swing tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. when it takes on San Diego State. The Cardinal return home on Monday for a tilt with Penn State at 7:00 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
