LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 7th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team was unable to resist a strong comeback by USC and eventually fell 3-2 to the Trojans in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Los Angeles. The Cardinal led 2-1 before the Trojans rallied for 15-4 and 15-11 wins in games four and five, respectively, to pull off the upset. The loss dropped the defending national champion Cardinal to 8-3 overall (7-3 MPSF) while USC upped its record to 6-9 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Despite six players with double-digit kills, the Cardinal were plagued by its lowest hitting percentage of the season (.235). Senior swing hitter Devin Poolman (Goleta, CA/Dos Pueblos HS) led Stanford with a career-high 29 kills. Freshman setter Josh Lukens (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) turned in a solid effort, recording 80 assists, seven digs and four blocks while hitting .429 (4-1-7).
Stanford returns to action on Friday, March 6 when it takes on UC San Diego at the UCSD Rimac Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
