Seventeen Track & Field Athletes to Compete at NCAA's in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Stanford University will send 17 track & field athletes to the 1998 NCAA Track & Field Championships at the State University of New York at Buffalo from June 3-7.

This is the largest contingent of Cardinal track & field athletes the university has ever sent to the NCAA's.

Gained entry to the NCAA's with a time of 29:23.04 in the 10,000 meters ... Finished sixth at the recent Pac-10 championships ... Also has ran the 5,000 meters this year in a conference qualifying time of 14:15.49 ... Redshirted last year in track ... A member of two winning NCAA cross country teams.

One of the top hammer throws in the country ... An NCAA qualifier with a throw of 226-01 (#3 in the Pac-10, a career-best) ... Finished fourth at the conference meet with a throw of 225-1 ... In 1996, gained All-American honors with a 15th place finish ... A medical redshirt last year ... His mother competed at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympics, while his father competed in the 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympics ... Has thrown the shot put this year with a conference qualifying throw of 53-5 3/4.

An NCAA qualifier in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:35.98, #2 in the Pac-10 ... Also has qualified for NCAA's in the 10,000 meters (28:16.60, #1 in the conference) ... Finished third at the Pac-10's this year with a time of 28:44.79 ... Placed second in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA's last year to gain All-America honors ... Ran the 5,000 meters at the 1997 Pac-10 meet to place third ... Won the NCAA indoor 5,000 meters in 1998 with a time of 13:58.50 ... Helped lead Stanford to the 1997 NCAA cross country championship for a second straight year ... Has gained All-America honors in cross country the past two years.

Like his twin brother, an NCAA qualifier in the 5,000 meters (13:42.37, #3 in the Pac-10) and the 10,000 meters (28:32.60) ... Finished second in the 5,000 meters at the recent Pac-10 meet ... Placed fourth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 1998 ... Gained All-America honors in the 5,000 meters at the 1997 NCAA's ... Finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the 1997 Pac-10 meet ... Has helped lead Stanford to two NCAA cross country titles ... A two-time All-American in cross country.

Ran a 3:59.32 mile at the Mt. Sac Relays ... Will run the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the NCAA's ... Has run 13:57.28 in the 5,000 meters ... At the 1998 NCAA Indoor's, placed fourth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 7:59.46 ... At the Pac-10 meet this year, ran the 5,000 meters where he finished third ... At the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene in 1997, ran a 4:02.81 in the mile, the fastest prep mile in 23 years ... Grew up in the wilderness of Northern California without electricity, admires Kenyan culture and believes in the healing power of yoga.

An NCAA provisional qualifier in the 5,000 meters (13:58.76) and the 10,000 meters (28:46.63) ... At the 1998 Pac-10 Track & Field Champioships, placed fourth in the 10,000 meters (28:46.63) ... Ran at the 1997 NCAA's in the 10,000 meters and placed 13th ... Helped lead Stanford to the 1997 NCAA cross country title, placing eighth to gain All-American honors ... Also earned All-America honors to help lead Stanford to the 1996 NCAA cross country championship.

Ran a 4:04.68 in the mile at the Mt. Sac Relays in April ... At the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 11, ran a Pac-10 qualifying time of 14:34.54 in the 5,000 meters ... Finished third in the 800 meters at the Pac-10's last year ... He was the top freshman in the race ... Placed ninth to gain All-America honors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA's in 1997 ... Set a then freshman school record in 1997 with a time of 4:02.72 in the mile ... During the summer of 1997, captured top honors in the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Junior Track & Field Championships ... Placed sixth at the conference meet last year ... Later competed at the NCAA's ... The 1995 Pac-10 champion in the 3,000 meters ... Later claimed All-America honors at the NCAA's ... A member of the 1996 winning NCAA cross country team.

The Pac-10's top pole vaulter at 12-9 (indoors) ... Vaulted 12-7 1/4 outdoors ... Captured the 1998 Pac-10 title with a vault of 12-5 1/2 ... Her NCAA provisional mark was set at the Cardinal Qualfier on May 16 ... Placed fourth in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor's in 1998 with a vault of 12-7 1/2.

An NCAA provisional qualifier in the 1,500 meters (4:23.44) and the 3,000 meters (9:26.26) ... Will only run the 3,000 meters at the NCAA's ... Ran the 1,500 meters at the recent Pac-10 meet where she finished fifth in a time of 4:27.92 ... Helped lead Stanford to second place at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, gaining All-America honors ... A member of the NCAA winning cross country team in 1996.

Tracye Lawyer, Junior

The Pac-10 champion in the heptathlon for a second straight season ... Tallied 5,809 points, a career-best, a school record and fourth-best all-time in the Pac-10 ... Captured four of the seven events in the heptathlon, and finished second in the other three ... Ranked #1 among collegiate hepatthletes in 1998 ... At the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships, after winning the heptathlon title, she competed in the regular portion of the meet, competing in the high jump (3rd place), long jump (5th place), and 200 meters (7th place) ... Last year, won the conference heptathlon title with 5,663 points ... After winning the heptathlon title in 1997, she placed fourth in the 200 meters, fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump during the regular portion of the conference meet ... An All-American in the heptathlon in 1997, finishing third in the NCAA's with 5,680 points ... A starter on the nationally-ranked Stanford women's soccer team.

A sensational freshman season ... An NCAA provisional qualifier in the 1,500 meters (4:21.41), the 3,000 meters (9:21.51, #3 in the conference) and the 5,000 meters (16:31.79, #3 in the Pac-10) ... Will only run the 5,000 meters at the NCAA's ... Placed second in the 5,000 meters (16:35.38) and fifth in the 3,000 meters (9:45.88) at the 1998 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships ... Gained All-America honors with a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meters at the 1998 NCAA Indoor's ... Stanford's top runner on the cross country team ... Led all Stanford runners with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to gain All-America honors.

An NCAA provisional mark of 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault ... Placed third at the Pac-10 championships with a vault of 12-1 1/2 ... Established her mark at the Bob Mathias Fresno Relays on April 4.
