STANFORD, Calif.- Both Stanford tennis programs will be represented this week as first round competition gets underway at the 2010 U.S. Open in New York.
Junior Bradley Klahn has earned a wildcard into the main draw and will face fellow American Sam Querrey, seeded No. 20 and ranked No. 22, in a first round match likely to be played on Wednesday.
Senior Hilary Barte and 2010 graduate Lindsay Burdette also received a wildcard into the main doubles draw and will face the 14th-seeded Russian tandem of Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva in a first round match expected to be played Wednesday or Thursday.
The three players received their wildcard entries as a result of winning their respective 2010 NCAA championships.
An All-American in both singles and doubles, Klahn defeated Louisville's Austen Childs 6-1, 6-2 en route to winning the NCAA Singles championship, capturing Stanford's 14th collegiate singles title and first since 2000. Barte and Burdette, Stanford's All-American doubles team for the past three seasons, outlasted Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 to win the NCAA Doubles championship. Barte and Burdette brought home Stanford's 13th overall collegiate doubles title in school history and sixth since the NCAA adopted its current format in 1982.
Meanwhile, incoming freshman Nicole Gibbs participated in the qualifying round as a wildcard and performed well with a 1-1 finish. After taking down Greece's Eirini Georgatou 6-3, 6-2 in her first match, Gibbs was edged 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 by Canada's Sharon Fichman in the second round.
