CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Stanford will open play in the 2007 USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship against No. 2 seed Ohio State on Feb. 16 at the Midtown Tennis Center in Chicago. The tournament, which includes 16 of the top teams in the nation, runs from February 16-19. Top-ranked and defending champion Georgia claimed the No. 1 seed, while Ohio State, UCLA, Virginia and Mississippi rounded out the No. 2-5 seeds, respectively.
Illinois, the champion in back-to-back years from 2003-04, is in front of 2005 champion and No. 7-seed Baylor, followed by No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 9 and defending NCAA champion Pepperdine. No. 10 Duke, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Boise State, No. 13 Texas, No. 14 Miami, No. 15 Stanford and No. 16 Penn to round out the field.
Stanford and UCLA are the only other two schools in the draw that have won the crown this decade, with the Cardinal capturing the title in 2000 and 2003, while the Bruins took home the trophy in 2001.
The championship has almost been a precursor to national dominance for the rest of the season, with 14 of the teams who competed in the title match over the 32-year history of the tournament going on to win the NCAA title, four times in the last nine years (Illinois - 2003; Stanford - 1998, 2000; Pepperdine - 2006).
Stanford leads all schools in the loaded field with 12 Indoor titles, followed by UCLA with seven and California, Pepperdine, Illinois, SMU and USC each with two. Baylor captured its first and only crown in 2005, while Georgia secured its place in the record book with its title run last season to round out the only teams to raise the trophy in the history of the ITA's longest-running championship.
Since 2000, Illinois and Stanford are tied with the most appearances in the finals with three apiece, each winning two titles in that span.
The 2007 edition of the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship is set to kick off at 9 a.m. (CST) on Friday, Feb. 16, at the Midtown Tennis Center with No. 4 Virginia taking on No. 13 Texas and No. 3 Mississippi facing No. 12 Boise State. Illinois will open its championship run with its match at 6:30 p.m. against No. 11 Oklahoma State.
