May 23, 1998
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Unbeaten and top-seeded Stanford had little trouble with
Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships Saturday,
but two seeded teams ran into more than they could handle.
No. 5 Texas was upset by No. 10 UCLA 4-2 and No. 8 Illinois was upset by No.
20 Auburn 4-1 in the 16-team single-elimination tournament.
Stanford (25-0), which is trying to win its fourth consecutive national
championship and 16th overall, stopped Minnesota 4-0. The Cardinal have lost
only three individual matches all season and are 174-3 in the singles and
doubles matches that make up an overall match.
In other first-round matches at the University of Georgia Tennis Center,
Mississippi State beat South Carolina 4-0, Georgia defeated Harvard 4-0, Ole
Miss downed California 4-1, SMU lost to LSU 4-0 and Pepperdine beat Southern
Cal 4-1.
In Sunday's quarterfinals, Stanford plays UCLA, Auburn takes on Mississippi
State, Georgia plays Pepperdine and Ole Miss plays LSU. The national semifinals
are Monday and the championship match is Tuesday.
