Stanford Defeats San Diego State

Feb. 14, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. - Despite heavy rains throughout the day, the men's tennis match between top-ranked Stanford and San Diego State proceeded as scheduled with the Cardinal defeating the Aztecs 4-0. With the win, Stanford improved to 6-0 on the season while the Aztecs dropped to 2-3.

After exhausting all efforts to play the match outdoors, Stanford and San Diego State moved to the Taube Family Tennis Stadium's lone indoor court where the contest was played out one match at a time until one team recorded the four points necessary for victory. The match, originally scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m., was finally completed at 8:50 p.m.

Playing down the singles flight, Stanford received its biggest scare at the No. 2 position where SDSU's Bobby Hrdina nearly pulled off an upset of Stanford's Ryan Wolters. Hrdina took the first set 6-3 and was serving for the match in game two, leading 5-4, before Wolters rallied for a 7-5 victory to force the third and deciding set. Wolters took the third set decisively 6-1. Stanford won in straight sets in each of three other matches played.

Stanford returns to action on Thursday, February 19 at the Rolex National Team Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Kentucky. Stanford's next home match is February 24 against the University of Utah at 1:30 p.m.
