OMAHA, Neb.-- Stanford's Bobby Bollier was edged out of an Olympic bid in the 200-meter fly at the U.S. Trials on Thursday, finishing third behind world record holder Michael Phelps and Tyler Clary.
In the finals of the 200 IM, sophomore Maya DiRado finished fourth with a time of 2:12.26, as Caitlin Leverenz (2:10.22) and Ariana Kukors (2:11.30) secured the two Olympic bids.
Bollier, who had the top prelim and semifinal time, was swimming third the entire meet, finishing with a time of 1:55.79, 2.14 seconds behind Clary's mark of 1:55.12. Phelps led the field at 1:53.65.
With Phelps leading from the start, Bollier trailed Davis Tarwater over the first 150 meters, before Tarwater faded to fourth and Clary passed both for second place over the final 50 meters.
Graduate BJ Johnson reached the finals of Friday's 200 breast with a seventh place (2:11.48) finish in the semifinals. He swam tenth in the morning prelims.
Alex Coville was 11th in the semifinals of the 100 free during the evening, after securing the final spot in the morning prelims (49.76). Fellow former Cardinal Aaron Wayne was 23rd (49.97) and Eugene Godsoe was 25th (50.01).
Elaine Breeden finished 17th in the prelims of the 200 fly (2:15.85), six-hundreths out of the top-16 semifinal evening round.
In Friday's prelims, the 200 back will feature three Stanford swimmers entered in the top-20 led by Eugene Godose (eighth) and Randall Bal (ninth). Freshman David Nolan is not only ranked No. 6 in Friday's 200 IM, but is also 17th in the 200 back. Kate Dwelley is rated No. 15 in the 100 free and Liz Smith is ranked No. 15 in the 200 breast in two other Friday prelims.
FORMAT: Shorter events, in the 100 and 200-meter category with consist of a prelims, semifinals (top-16) and finals (top-8). Longer events, 400-meters and longer will have a prelim and finals (top-8). The event is broadcast throughout the week on NBC, NBC Sports Network and also available via live webcast at www.usasswimming.org.
To make an Olympic team, a maximum of 26 men and 26 women are chosen. Since the format has been adopted the top four finishers in the 100 and 200 freestylers, as well as the top two finishers in each other event have made Team USA. Second place finishers are added based on world rankings in 2011 and 2012, after the top-four 100/200 freestylers and the winners of each event are chosen.
