FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen is headed to his first Olympic Games after he, and Troy Dumais won the Olympic Trial 3-Meter Synchro with a three-round combined score of 1296.21.
The duo held on to its semifinal lead and defeated Chris Colwill and Drew Livingston, who scored 1263.51. Stanford alum Dwight Dumais and his brother Justin, finished in third place with a combined three-round score of 1151.46.
Following the fifth round, Ipsen and Dumais missed their reverse 3 ½ somersault tuck, tallying 5.0's to 7.5's for just 69.30 points. Colwill and Livingston meanwhile closed to 24.78 points with a dive to go following 7.5's and 8.0's. Ipsen and Dumais, who will make his fourth Olympics, finished off their night with 8.5's and 9.0's for 87.72 points.
The duo maintained their lead in the finals, pushing across 9.0's to start, with a 54.00 on an inward tuck in their second dive after a 52.80 and 9.0's on a back pike to start.
The Dumais brothers were the third duo to surpass 1000 points, thanks to 8.5's in three of their first four final dives. On a forward 2 ½ somersault with two twists, the duo scored 84.66.
Dumais and Ipsen came into the Finals with a 26.67 lead after a combined score of 876.00 over the first two rounds.
Stanford could have its second diver at the Olympics after Saturday's 3-Meter women's finals, as alumnae Cassidy Krug is the top seed in Saturday's women's 3-Meter at 1 p.m. Ipsen can earn a a second berth on Sunday as the top seed in the men's 3-Meter on Sunday at noon. The top two individual scores per event earn a spot on the Olympic team. NBC Sports Network will air the synchro live, and NBC will tape delay the women's final and air the men's final on Sunday starting at noon.
