FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen maintained the top preliminary round score and heads into his second U.S. Olympic Diving Trial finals with the top mark after a 993.80 in the individual 3-Meter.
Stanford diving has the top score in three finals in the upcoming days, Ipsen and Troy Dumais in Friday's 3-Meter syncho at 8 p.m., Cassidy Krug in Saturday's women's 3-Meter at 1 p.m. and Ipsen in the men's 3-Meter on Sunday at noon. The top synchro score earns an Olympic berth, as do the top two individual scores per event.
Ipsen finished ahead of 3-Meter synchro teammate Troy Dumais's score of 954.20 and Chris Colwill's 951.15 third place score in the semifinals. Stanford alum Dwight Dumais was sixth at 793.30.
With Ipsen in front by nearly 40 points to start the night, the lead shrank to within 18-22 points with Colwill scoring an 88.40 to move into second place with three dives to go. Ipsen then countered with a 91.80 on a forward 2 ½ somersault and two twist to keep in front by 25 points after four rounds. Ipsen then followed it up with 89.25 points on a reverse 3 1/2 to put it out of reach.
NBC Sports Network will air the synchro live, and NBC will tape delay the women's final and air the men's final on Sunday starting at noon.
During the morning session, Ipsen scored a prelim-best 511.90, 46 points ahead of 3-Meter synchro teammate Troy Dumais (465.70). Stanford alum Dwight Dumais was seventh with a score of 390.90. Ipsen closed out his morning with back-to-back 9.0's on a reverse 3 ½ somersault tuck for 94.50 points and a reverse 1 ½ somersault with a 3 ½ twist for 90.10 points.
In the 10-Meter platform during the morning prelims, incoming freshman Lillian Hinrichs was 27th with a score of 243.75 of 32 divers. Hinrichs scored 7.5's on her first dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault and 7.0's on her fourth dive, on a reverse 2 ½ somersault. Hinrichs missed her final dive, which would have put her in the top-20, if she had completed the dive.
