The second-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team remained undefeated with a 179-116 win over No. 7 USC today at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal improve to 5-0, 3-0 in the Pac-10 in 2004-05 while the Trojans drop to 4-2, 2-1 in league action.
The Cardinal have now won 38 consecutive dual meets, dating back to the 1999-2000 season.
The Stanford relay team of Jayme Cramer, Ricky Eddy, Daniel Beal and Kyle Ransom got things started with a win in the 400 medley relay, posting an impressive time of 3:15.37. USC's Larsen Jensen won the 1650 (15:03.79), followed by Cardinal sophomore Shaun Phillips (15:06.67) and junior Michael McLean (15:29.32). Sophomore Andy Grant broke the pool and school record in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:34.54 (also an NCAA automatic qualifying time). Teammate Jayme Cramer was second (1:38.18).
It was a 1-2-3 finish for Stanford in the 100 backstroke as Hongzhe Sun took top honors, touching the wall in 48.37. Junior Tobias Oriwol was second in 49.96, while junior Mark Stephens placed third (50.45). Senior Gary Marshall was victorious in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 54.07. He was followed by teammate Ricky Eddy (54.76). It was another 1-2-3 finish for the Cardinal in the 200 butterfly as senior Matt McDonald won the event in a time of 1:46.63. Freshman Peter Carothers was second (1:49.17) and fellow frosh Daniel Beal was third (1:49.71).
In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Ben Wildman-Tobriner
took top honors, touching the wall in 20.08. He was followed by teammate Kyle Ransom
(20.66). USC's Michael Hilde won the one-meter diving competition (319.42). Stanford's Jesse Fonner
was fourth with a score of 265.95. Wildman-Tobriner won his second event of the day in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 44.33 to edge teammate Ransom (44.81) for the win.
Hongzhe Sun also won his second event of the afternoon with a victory in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:44.81. Teammate Tobias Oriwol was second (1:46.65) while Andy Grant was third (1:48.03). Yet another 1-2-3 finish was in store for the Cardinal in the 200 breaststroke as Gary Marshall won in a time of 1:56.70 (automatic NCAA qualifying time). Junior Nick Wolfe was second (2:01.80) while junior Mark Stephens was third (2:03.40).
Michael McLean won the 500 freestyle in 4:23.27 over teammate Shaun Phillips (4:25.29). Senior Jayme Cramer won the 100 butterfly, touching the wall i n 47.37. Fellow senior Matt McDonald was second in a tight race (47.84). Trojan Michael Hilde won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 336.90. Sophomore diver Kevin McLean led the Cardinal with a fourth place finish (267.22).
USC's Ous Mellouli won the 200 IM in 1:48.16 just edging Stanford's Tobias Oriwol (1:48.20) who posted the second-fastest time in the event. The Cardinal relay team of Andy Grant, Kyle Ransom, Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Jayme Cramer recorded the fastest time in the final event of the day - the 400 freestyle - with a time of 2:58.3.
The Cardinal close out the dual meet season against California on February 19 in Berkeley.
