Top-Ranked Stanford Swimmers Sweep Arizona

Cardinal men and women remain unbeaten.

Jan. 23, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. --- The top-ranked Stanford University men's and women's swimming teams remained unbeaten on Friday afternoon by defeating Arizona at deGuerre Pool. The Cardinal men (4-0) beat No. 9 Arizona (3-2) 150-85, while the Stanford women (2-0) beat the fifth-ranked Wildcat women (5-2) 161-137.

In the men's competition, Senior Tom Wilkens (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) set a pair of deGuerre Pool records in his first appearance on The Farm since finishing seventh in the 200 meter breaststroke at the World Championships last week in Perth, Australia. Wilkens broke his own record in the 400 yard Individual Medley by posting a 3:49.76 (old mark 3:53.67), and also swam a 1:59.48 in the 200 breaststroke to break Kurt Grote's old mark of 2:00.21. Sophomore Ryk Neethling (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Grey College) won the 500 freestyle (4:27.86) and the 1000 freestyle (9:04.55) for the Arizona men.

Freshman diver Kim Powers (Crewstview Heights, KY/Dixie Hieghts HS) swept the one-meter (183.00) and three-meter diving (203.50) competitions to pace the Stanford women. Arizona's Laurie Kline (Upper Sandusky, OH/Rancho Bernardo HS) won both the 500 freestyle (4:50.80) and 1000 freestyle (9:53.43) to help the Wildcats sweep the distance events.

Stanford returns to action on Saturday at deGuerre Pool against Arizona State. The men take on on No. 12 ASU at 11 a.m., while the women face the No. 21 Sun Devils at 1 p.m.
