2008 Stanford Men's Soccer Schedule
STANFORD, Calif - The Stanford men's soccer team released its schedule today for the upcoming 2008 season. The Cardinal will play a total of 20 contests, two exhibition and 18 regular season, in a slate that features seven teams that qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
The Cardinal will take to the pitch of Laird Q. Cagan Stadium 11 times in the fall, opening the regular-season home schedule September 7 against Cornell. Stanford will compete in three tournaments during the course of the season, including the annual Stanford Nike Classic, and will be part of two home doubleheaders with the women's side on top of its annual conference season in the always competitive Pac-10.
The Cardinal will first host two exhibition matches against local opponents, Sonoma State on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Sacramento State on Friday, Aug. 23, before opening the regular season with a road game at San Jose State on Sunday, Aug. 31.
The following Friday, Stanford will head to Berkeley for the Cal Invitational and will take on traditional soccer powerhouse SMU in the tournament's opening match on Sept. 5. The Cardinal will then travel back to The Farm for its regular-season home opener, finishing out the Cal Invitational against the Ivy League's Cornell at 1 p.m.
On Sept. 13, Stanford will have a one-game weekend when they participate in the first leg of the annual Bay Area Classic, traveling to San Francisco to take on the USF Dons.
The Cardinal will then return home to Cagan Stadium on Sept. 19 for the annual Stanford Nike Classic. This year's tournament features two Midwestern schools, Drake and Creighton, along with Pac-10 rival California. Stanford will host Creighton, which reached the third round of last year's NCAA Tournament, on the first day of the tournament at 8 p.m in a nationally-televised game on Fox Soccer Channel. The Cardinal will complete tournament play against the Drake Bulldogs on Sept. 21.
The Bay Area Classic will conclude for Stanford on Sept. 27 with another one-game weekend, when local rival Santa Clara, which also advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last year, makes the short trip up El Camino Real to the Farm for a 7 p.m. Saturday night game.
The Cardinal will then begin Pac-10 play, and its quest for its second Pac-10 Championship in program history, on the road at Washington on Oct. 3, and at Oregon State on Oct. 5.
Stanford will return home the following weekend, Oct. 10 and 12, hosting San Diego State and UCLA, respectively. Both games will be part of doubleheader events with the women's side, with the men opening play at 4:30 p.m. against the Aztecs, and competing in Sunday's second contest against the Bruins at 2:30 p.m.
The Cardinal will then finish out the remaining six games on the Pac-10 schedule, pausing once in the midst of the conference season to compete in a non-conference road match against New Mexico on Oct. 24. Stanford will finish out the regular season with a finale against Cal in Berkeley on Nov. 15.
Last season, the Cardinal went 7-6-5 overall, and its 4-4-2 record in Pac-10 play tied it for second with San Diego State and UCLA.
