PENROSE, New Zealand -- Simon Elliott, a senior midfielder on the Stanford
Men's Soccer team, has been one of 22 players named to the New Zealand
National Team, New Zealand Soccer announced on Thursday. A native of
Wellington, New Zealand, Elliott will travel with the "All-White" squad to
Mexico, where it will participate in the Confederations Cup from July
23rd-August 4th.
The 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup Championships will consist of the
United States National Team, along with six other national powerhouses. The
New Zeland squad was placed in Group B and will play first-round matches
against the United States (July 24), Germany (July 28) and Brazil (July
30). The top two teams in each group will then advance to the
single-elimination Championship Round that begins with the semifinals on
August 1st.
The Confederations Cup concludes an amzing year for Elliott, who
helped lead Stanford to the 1998 NCAA Championship Match. In his final year
of collegiate soccer, Elliott was named Third Team All-American, First Team
All-Far West Region and MPSF Co-Player of the Year. For the season,
Elliott was first on the Stanford team with nine goals, seven assists and
25 points.
