Stanford Rallies For 2-1 Season Opening Win
San Jose, CA - The Stanford men's soccer team overcame a sluggish start in the first half and rallied for a 2-1 come-from-behind win over San Jose State (1-1). The victory extended the Cardinal win streak to six games, dating back to last season.
San Jose State controlled the offensive tempo of the game through most of the first half, posting nine shots on goal. The Spartans were able to connect on just one however as junior Aman Kebread found the back of the net at the 18 minute mark to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Redshirt-freshman goalie Adam Zapala registered seven saves in the first half to keep the Cardinal within reach.
The Cardinal (1-0) began to click with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half,
and while unable to convert, it carried over to the second stanza, and Stanford
dominated on both sides of the ball for the remainder of the match. Junior transfer
Simon Elliott got the Cardinal on the board with the first goal of his career, a
penalty kick at the 56 minute mark. Constantly keeping the ball in the Spartan half
of the field, the Cardinal struck again on junior Eric Vandevelde's 20-footer over the
goalie. He assisted on the goal by freshman Corey Woolfolk. The Cardinal defense limited the
Spartans to just one shot on goal in the second half.
