STANFORD, Calif. -- The nation's longest win streak came to an end today in the championship match of the 1997 Stanford-Nike Invitational as 11th-ranked Stanford men's soccer team battled 22nd-ranked Dartmouth to a double-overtime 0-0 tie. However, Stanford (9-0-1) still claimed its third tournament title of the season in three tries with a 3-1 goal differential advantage over Dartmouth (4-1-2). The Cardinal won both the UNLV/Coors Light Classic and the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic earlier this season. The non-win for the Cardinal ended their 14-game winning streak which began on October 25, 1996 with a 2-1 victory over UC Irvine. Earlier in the day, 25th-ranked California bounced back from a 2-1 overtime defeat to Dartmouth in the tourney opener with a convincing 5-0 victory over Harvard. The Golden Bears improved to 6-2-1 on the season while Harvard fell to 2-4-2.
The Stanford-Dartmouth matchup lived up to its billing. Featuring two of the top defensive teams in the nation, anchored by goalies which both ranked in the top five in the country in goals-against average entering the tournament, it figured to be a low scoring affair. In 120 minutes of hard-fought, physical play - marked by four yellow cards - both teams managed few scoring opportunities. Evenly matched through the first half, with each team registering six shots on goal, Stanford began wearing down the Big Green defense in the later stages of the game but it still was not enough to penetrate the goal. For the eighth time in 10 contests this season, Stanford failed to yield a goal.

#25 California vs. Harvard
Cal opened the final day of the tournament with a 5-0 rout of Harvard. The
Golden Bears scored earlier and often, finding the back of the net three times
in the first 28 minutes. Sophomore midfielder J.V. Ganal opening the scoring
in the 16th minute with a roller to the far post. Freshman forward Kendall
Simmonds, who created havoc on the Crimson defense throughout the day, extended
the lead to 2-0 with a goal at the 26:08 mark on a feed from sophomore
midfielder Justin Bell. Simmonds managed five shots on goal on the day and
only the play of Harvard goalie Jordan Dupuis prevented Simmonds from recording
a multiple-goal game. Senior midfielder Jason Young put Cal up 3-0 a minute
later, taking a pass from junior forward Matt Newmark and drilling it into the
far post. Cal never looked back from that point on. Bell and freshman
midfielder Ramiro Arrendondo posted the final two goals of the match in the
second half.
