No. 10 Stanford Drops No. 8 Washington 1-0
Cardinal Run Unbeaten Streak to 16 Games, Post Ninth Shutout
Seattle, Wash.-The 10th-ranked Stanford men's soccer team improved to 10-0-1 (2-0-0 MPSF) by defeating eighth-ranked Washington today 1-0 at the Husky Soccer Field in Seattle, Wash. The shutout of the Huskies (8-2-2, 1-1 MPSF), aided by freshman goalkeeper Adam Zapala's save on a penalty kick in the 44th minute, was Stanford's ninth in 11 games this season and increased the Cardinal's unbeaten streak to 16 games. During that stretch, Stanford has posted a 15-0-1 mark.
Stanford junior midfielder Eric Vandevelde (La Canada, CA/Loyola HS) headed in the game-wining goal at the 15:56 mark, taking a cross from sophomore defender Gerard Davis via junior midfielder Simon Elliott. The goal was Vandevelde's second of the season. Zapala, from nearby Cupertino, CA (Bellarmine Prep), lowered his nation-leading goals-against average to 0.175.
"It's a great win away from home, especially in the fact it was a league game," said assistant coach Geoffrey Wheeler. "Washington is very dangerous up front. They have a lot of speed and our guys did a great job of not letting them get behind us."
Stanford will complete the road swing on Sunday, October 12 when they take on Oregon State at 1:00 p.m.
