On December 21, 2011, Stanford's Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby appointed Jeremy Gunn head men's soccer coach.

Gunn, 40, becomes the 15th coach in the program's history.

Gunn previously served as head coach at the University of Charlotte for the past five seasons, building the 49er program into a national title contender. He led Charlotte to two NCAA tournament appearances, including this season when the 49ers advanced to the championship match of the College Cup before losing to top-ranked North Carolina. After the season, Gunn was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

"I am truly honored to accept the position as the new head men's soccer coach at Stanford University," said Gunn. "I am excited to begin a new era of Stanford Men's Soccer, and am thrilled to be given the opportunity to become a part of one of the most prestigious universities in the world. I am looking forward to the chance to continue to develop and learn from such a successful athletics department, and to interact and work with some of the most respected collegiate coaches in the country."

During the five seasons at Charlotte, Gunn compiled a 64-26-14 record, including a 5-2 mark in the NCAA Tournament. The 49ers also won a pair Atlantic-10 Conference titles under Gunn's guidance in 2010 and `11.

"Jeremy Gunn has a proven track record of winning and developing student-athletes and programs everywhere he has coached," said Bowlsby. "We are very excited to welcome Jeremy Gunn as our new men's soccer coach. His teams are known to be extremely well organized, determined, hard-working and well coached. He is passionate about teaching and developing his student-athletes as soccer players and young men. With Jeremy at the helm we look forward to returning Stanford men's soccer to national prominence year in and year out."

A 1993 graduate of Cal-State Bakersfield, Gunn began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater. He served on both the men's and women's coaching staffs during his seven-year stint at Bakersfield, helping the Roadrunners to the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championship and an appearance in the 1995 National Semifinal.

After leaving Cal-State Bakersfield, Gunn went to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., where he built the program into a Division II power. Fort Lewis advanced to three national title games and won the 2005 Division II championship with a 22-0-1 mark, earning Gunn national coach of the year honors.

Gunn finished his eight-year career at Fort Lewis with an overall record of 123-35-17 and in 13 seasons at Fort Lewis and Charlotte, Gunn is 187-61-31 (.754). Gunn was also had a successful playing career. Growing up in England, he was a youth player at Grimsby Town F.C. and Scunthorpe United F.C., while representing the North Region as an English schoolboy. A first team all-American at Cal-State Bakersfield, Gunn played professionally from 1993-95 with the Chico Rooks Pro Soccer Club in Chico, Calif., the North Bay Breakers in Rohnert Park, Calif.; and in 1998 with the Nashville (Tenn.) Metros and the Charleston (S.C.) Battery of what is now called the United Soccer League (formerly the A-League).
