Stanford Captures NCAA Bid
15th-Ranked Cardinal to Face Division Rival Washington
STANFORD, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Stanford men's soccer
team has captured one of the 16 at-large bids to the 32-team
1997 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament. The Cardinal
(13-4-2), which will be making its first NCAA tournament
appearance in five years (1992) and just the fifth in school
history, will travel to Seattle to face MPSF Mountain Division
rival and fourth-ranked Washington (14-2-2) in the opening
round . Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, November 23 at 12:00
Noon.
Stanford and Washington met once in the regular season (also in
Seattle) with the Cardinal claiming a 1-0 victory. Junior
defender Eric Vandevelde (La Canada, CA/Loyola HS) hit the
game-winner just 15 minutes into the contest and freshman
goalkeeper Adam Zapala (Cupertino, CA/Bellarmine Prep) stopped
a Husky penalty kick in the 44th minute to preserve the
victory.
