Stanford, Calif. - For a second consecutive weekend, the No. 1 Stanford men's gymnastics team will take on No. 2 California in a battle of Bay Area rivals. This time the Cardinal will host the action, Saturday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
Last weekend at Cal, Stanford won the meet by a score of 352.75-340.1. Tim Gentry led the Cardinal with event wins in both the vault and the still rings.
"I was happy with our performance for the most part," said head coach Thom Glielmi. "Being the first meet there are usually some mistakes, and for six of our 12 competing - This was their first meet competing for the Cardinal."
Among the newcomers, last week was Eddie Penev, who had the top routine in the floor exercise. Penev is former youth national champion in the event and considered a NCAA title contender in the floor exercise.
Despite the convincing win last week, the Cardinal will continue to look for improvements as it continues the quest for a repeat national title.
"The plan is to improve on our difficulty and execution," said Glielmi. "There is nothing radical about this; it just takes time to work elements into the routine."
"The lineup is likely to change a bit for each meet the next month. I need to see how the newcomers handle themselves and we also have guys coming back from injury."
The meet is free admission and will be webcast live on gostanford.com.
