STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford will compete in its first home meet on Saturday when it hosts the Stanford Open at Burnham Pavilion at 7 p.m. The Cardinal (1-0) will take on No. 4 Oklahoma (3-0), No. 5 Nebraska (2-1) and No. 6 California (0-1).

Season Opener: The Cardinal recorded the highest team score on five of six events in its season opening victory at California, outscoring the Bears 425.00-411.150. Stanford's team score of 425.000 is the third-highest team score in the NCAA on the season.

Penev Starts Strong: Stanford senior and five-time All-American Eddie Penev led the Cardinal, recording first-place finishes on floor and the all-around. His scores of 15.650 on floor and 85.200 on the all-around both rank first in the NCAA on the season. Penev also earned a second-place finish on parallel bars.

Penev was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week and College Gymnast Association Division I National Gymnast of the Week for his performance.

Freshmen Debuts: Freshmen Kevin Baker and Jon Deaton made their collegiate debuts against Cal. Baker earned a second-place finish on vault (14.600) and fourth-place finish on still rings (14.200). Deaton delivered a strong floor exercise routine that scored 14.850, good for a fourth-place finish.

Team Effort: Stanford currently ranks in the NCAA top five on every event. High bar, second; Floor exercise, third; still rings, third; parallel bars, third; pommel; horse, fourth; vault, fifth.


 

 

Saturday's Opponents:

Oklahoma: The Sooners are coming off its 14th consecutive Rocky Mountain Classic victory, finishing ahead of Nebraska, Air Force and Arizona State. Oklahoma dominated the event, claiming all seven individual titles and scoring 423.500 overall.

The defending MPSF champions - a team that carried 10 freshmen on its 18-man roster - finished second at the 2012 NCAA National Championships.

Oklahoma defeated Stanford (356.950-351.400) in its last regular season meeting on March 3, 2012 in Norman, Okla.

Nebraska: The Cornhuskers finished second to Oklahoma at the Rocky Mountain Classic, recording an overall score of 418.900. Nebraska finished third in last year's Stanford Open with a score of 332.600.

California: This will be the second consecutive week the Bears will take on Stanford. Cal finished second to the Cardinal in its season opener, 425.000-411.150.

Cal was led by junior Jeffrey Langenstein who tied Stanford senior Eddie Penev for the highest score on floor exercise (15.650).
