Penev Named National Gymnast of the Week

STANFORD, Calif. - A day after being named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, Stanford senior Eddie Penev was named the College Gymnastics Association Division I National Gymnast of the Week. It marks the third time Penev has received the honor in his career.

The five-time All-American helped lead No. 3 Stanford to a season opening 425.000-411.150 victory at No. 6 California with first-place finishes in the floor (15.650) and all-around (85.200) events. Penev currently ranks first in the nation in both events.

Penev also recorded second and third-place finishes on parallel bars (14.700) and high bar (13.850), respectively.

Stanford's team score of 425.000 was the third highest team score in the NCAA on the season.

The voting for the honor is performed by the 17 active college coaches and the 35 CGA Honorary Lifetime Members, plus seven major club programs.

Stanford hosts the Stanford Open on Saturday at Burnham Pavilion at 7 p.m. and will take on No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Nebraska and No. 6 California.
