STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 Stanford men's gymnastics team begins defense of their national title tomorrow night at No. 5 California. The rivals will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Cal's Haas Pavilion.
Stanford took two of three dual meets from the Golden Bears last season, rebounding from a loss to start the season to win the Big Flipoff and the last event of the regular season, propelling the Cardinal to first-place finishes at MPSF Championships, NCAA Qualifiers and NCAA Finals competition.
Cal has a deep roster with 19 athletes, six more than the Cardinal and Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi will get his first opportunity to manage his talented but shallow squad.
"It's been a while since we've competed and it will be good to see how the team performs," said Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi. "At this point in the season we're still in a learning phase, figuring out how to best position ourselves to make another NCAA title run."
The Cardinal is led by captains Gabriel Alvarado and Jordan Nolff. A tentative lineup follows.
