Men's Gymnastics Thrives At Stanford Open

Stanford, Calif. - As part of the weekend extravaganza of gymnastics, Stanford and California competed in the NCAA portion of the Stanford Open on Saturday night. In front of a sold out crowd at Burnham Pavilion, the Cardinal had several outstanding performances in meet that was non-team scored.

The meet gave head coach Thom Glielmi a chance to get several athletes meet experience with several veterans resting or competing as individuals.

Freshman Eddie Penev led Stanford as the only athlete to compete in every event. Penev wowed on both the vault and in the floor exercise, taking the top score on each event. The Rochester, N.Y. native e his score scored a 15.7 on the vault and a 15.4 in the floor exercise. Penev totaled a 82.85 in his first try at the all-around as a collegiate.

The other top performer for Stanford was John Martin who had the high score on both the parallel bars and the pommel horse. Martin scored 14.55 on the parallel bars for the top score overall, while his 13.7 on the pommel horse trailed three athletes from Cal.

Among the other highlight performances for Stanford came from Cameron Foreman, who nailed his routine on the high bar, including a perfect landing, for a score of 14.6. The routine was the best of the day for Stanford and trailed only Kyle Bunthuwong of Cal.

Finally, freshman James Fosco had the top performance on rings. His score of 14.75 was easily the top score in the event.

The Cardinal will next compete next weekend when they take part in the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada. The competition will begin Thursday, Feb. 4 and continue on Saturday, Feb. 6.
