Stanford Heads South To The Prestige: The Stanford men's golf team closes out the fall season at The Prestige at PGA West, held November 4-5 at the La Quinta Resort Mountain Golf Resort in La Quinta, Calif. which is co-hosted by Stanford and UC Davis. The 54-hole tournament will also feature a Collegiate/Am on Nov. 3, as well as a free golf clinic for kids and their famlies. Tournament teams will play 36 holes on Nov. 4 and 18 holes on Nov. 5.
"Last year's event was a huge success and we have a great field returning this year," said head coach Jeff Mitchell. "This yea'rs tournament represents the very best in college golf and in academic excellence. It is a great showcase event about everything college sport is about."
Tournament Participants: The three-round tournament features 18 teamsand consists of Texas Christian, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, Kansas, Oregon, Colorado, Pacific, Washington, Stanford, UC Davis, Air Force, Rice, San Diego, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Yale.
Last Year: The Stanford men's golf team finished play in 11th place with a three round total of 869 (291-286-292) in The Prestige at the Desert Willow Golf Resort on Tuesday. Washington captured the title after firing its third consecutive round below par to finish with a 844. Kansas and Colorado tied for second place (849), followed by Northwestern (852) and UC Davis (857). Jim Seki (73-70-72) tied for 23rd with a one-under 215. Blake Mastalir (73-75-75) and Pat Phillips (75-77-71) each carded a 223 to tie for 62nd. Kevin Blue (75-74-76) finished tied for 73rd place with a three round total of 225.
Last Time Out: The Stanford men's golf team finished tied for seventh with a three-round total of 862 at The Nelson Invitational last weekend. Senior Jim Seki tied for sixth individually with a 208 (70-70-68) followed by Ron Won who tied for 14th with a 212 (68-71-73). Del de Windt tied for 35th with a 219 (74-75-70) and Pat Phillips tied for 68th (226). Several Cardinal golfers competed as individuals, including George Downing who tied for 37th (220). Blake Mastalir tied for 76th (228) and Kyle Gentry placed 82nd (230). Freshman Scott MacDonald finished 91st (235).
Head Coach Jeff Mitchell: A former professional golfer on the PGA Tour and director of golf at Texas Tech, Jeff Mitchell begins his third year as the head men's golf coach at Stanford. Prior to coming to The Farm, Mitchell spent 10 years as the head women's golf coach at Texas Tech, an in 1998, he became the golf director for both the men's and women's programs. A 1989 graduate of Texas Tech, Mitchell earned a degree in physical education and his teaching certification in 1990.
