Stanford finds itself tied for fifth place after the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters being held in Las Vegas, Nev. after the Cardinal posted a first round score of 292 (+4).
The Cardinal, along with top-ranked Texas and Alabama, trails first place California by six shots heading into the second round after the Golden Bears posted a 286 (-2).
Host UNLV is one shot off the pace at 287 while Texas A&M is in third place at 288 (E). UCLA is five strokes off the pace at 291 (+3).
Sophomore Cameron Wilson shot a two-under 70 on Friday and is tied for sixth place, four strokes behind Logan McCracken of Texas Tech, who carded a 66 on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands layout.
Wilson picked up to early birdies on holes No. 2 and 4 and was at even par on his round before making birdies on 16 and 18 for his round of 70.
Andrew Yun is tied for 19th after carding an even par 72. Yun was three-over after making a double bogey on hole No. 4 but rallied with birdies on No. 5, 7 and 8 to make the turn at even par. After making a bogey on hole No. 10, Yun went birdie-eagle on holes 12 and 13 for his score of 72.
Patrick Rodgers and David Chung are tied for 40th after carding rounds of 75 (+3).
Rodgers made back-to-back birdies on holes No. 5 and 6 and was even on the front nine. However, he bogied three of his first four holes on the back side and had to settle for a three-over 75.
Chung got off to a blazing start, making an eagle 2 on the par-4 first hole and following with a birdie on the par-3 second hole. After making the turn at one-under, Chung doubled holes 10 and 12 enroute to a 75.
Junior Steve Kearney is tied for 51st after a opening round 76.
Second round play gets underway at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at Southern Highlands.
