Men's Golf Begins Spring Season with PING/Arizona Invite Feb. 1

OFF THE FIRST TEE: The Cardinal begins its spring season with the PING/Arizona Invitational, held in Tucson, Ariz... Eighteen teams will play three rounds in two days (Feb. 1-2) on the par-71, 6,900-yard Raven Golf Course. Eight of the Pac-10 teams will participate, as well as six of the top 25 teams. UNLV will not return to defend its 1998 title. Stanford finished ninth in this event last year, while Joel Kribel earned individual medalist honors, recording 68-67-65-200.

LEADING THE CARDINAL: Senior captain and two-time All-American Joel Kribel began the season ranked fifth in the MaterCard/Collegiate Golf Poll and is currently 11th... He won the PING/Arizona in 1998 with a career-best 13-under-par 200... Finished tied for second at the Husky Invitational with a 73-70-69-212 to open the season... Earned a third-place tie at the Windon Memorial Classic, carding a 68-71-139... His eighth-place tie at the Wolfpack Classic ended his streak of top-five finishes at 12 collegiate tournaments... Has already recorded seven under-par scores this season, in only 11 rounds... Earned medalist honors at the 1998 U.S. Amateur... Participated as an amateur at the 1998 U.S. Open and Masters... Finished second at the Northeast Amateur... Member of the World Amateur Team... Earned First Team All-America honors for the second straight season last year... Last season, averaged 71.78 strokes over 12 tournaments while posting 11 top-10 and eight top-five finishes... Posted a 16-under-par 272 (69-67-68-68) at the NCAA Championships and finished second at the Pac-10 Championships with a 285... Finished fourth at the regionals with a 213... Earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors.... Carded a career-best six-under-par 65 in the second round... Three-round total of 200 tied the tournament record... Has five career victories.... Also finished third at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (146), Anteater Invitational (213) and UTEP Intercollegiate (229).

DUSTING THE SHELVES: Junior Dusty Brett wasted no time beginning the season, winning his first tournament of his collegiate career at the Husky Invitational, held in his hometown of Tacoma, Wash... Carded rounds of 68, 74 and a career-low 67 for a career-low total 209... Competed in all 12 events for the Cardinal last season, finishing with a 74.69 stroke average, second best on the team... Carded nine par/under-par rounds while tallying two top-10 and three top-25 finishes... Earned Second Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors and Honorable Mention All Pac-10 recognition ... Finished second with a season-best 214 at the Nike/Northwest Classic in Corvallis... Fired a season-low 68 in the opening round.

MEET THE TEAM: The Cardinal returns ten members from last year's squad, including three seniors, two juniors and five sophomores... Three freshman join the team: Del deWindt of Bloomfiled Hills, Mich.; K.C. Yasmer of Tucson, Ariz.; and Ned Yetten of Andover, Mass... deWindt was voted MVP of his Cranbrook Kingswood High School team all four years and also earned varsity letters in hockey and lacrosse... Yasmer represented Arizona in the 1996 America's Cup matches in Vancouver, B.C., and the 1997 Hogan Cup matches in Portland, Ore... Yetten was a three-time Massachusetts Junior Amateur Champion.

WALLLY'S WINNING WAYS: Head coach Wally Goodwin begins his 12th season at Stanford... Has already led his team to four top-five finishes, tying for first place at the Husky Invitiational and finishing fourth at the Windon Memorial, Wolfpack and Nelson Tournaments... His 1994 team became the seventh NCAA men's golf championships team in school history... Has coached two Pac-10 Championship teams, three individual conference champions and seven All-Americans, including 1998 First Team selection Joel Kribel ... Was named the 1994 NCAA Coach of the Year and the 1992 and 1995 Pac-10 Coach of the Year.

AS THE LEAVES FALL: Here's a tournament-by-tournament recap to Stanford's 1998 Fall season.

1. Husky Invitational, Sept. 28-29, Tacoma, Wash. - The Cardinal tied for first with Oregon at 1091 (+11), but lost the tournament title in a one-hole sudden-death playoff. Dusty Brett won his first collegiate tournament, firing a career-low 67 in the final round at the par-72 Olympic North Golf Course. His three-round total 209 (-7) was also a career low. Joel Kribel finished behind Brett, in a four-way tie for second with a 212 (-4).

2. Windon Memorial Classic, Oct. 5-6, Glenview, Ill. - Stanford tied for fourth with No. 12 Florida in the two-round event (284-304-588). Rain canceled the first round. Joel Kribel was the team's top finisher, placing T3rd at five-under-par 139. Jimmy Lee finished T17th at five-over 147.

3. Wolf Pack Classic, Oct. 12-13, Carson City, Nev. - The Cardinal finished fourth for the second consecutive tournament, posting rounds of 295, 283 and 305 (883). Jimmy Lee posted the highest tournament finish of his career, placing 12th with a 219. Joel Kribel was Stanford's top scorer, recording a one-over-par 217 for eighth place.

4. The Nelson, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, Stanford, Calif. - For the third tournament in a row, Stanford finished fourth with 289-292-290-871. The Cardinal concluded its fall season with four strong top-four finishes. Joel Kribel led the way with a second-place finish with a seven-under-par 206.

1997-98 IN REVIEW: Stanford competed in 12 tournaments, posting three top-five and seven top-10 finishes... The Cardinal averaged 299 strokes over 31 rounds... Stanford finished third with 875 at the Nike/Northwest Classic... Stanford tied for fourth (888) at the Anteater Invitational in Irvine... The Cardinal finished fifth at The Nelson (874) played at the Stanford Golf Course... The squad carded a season-best 865 at the Pacific Invitational... The Cardinal recorded a season-low five-under-par 283 in the first round... Stanford completed the season with a sixth-place finish (1477) at the 72-hole Pac-10 Championships played in Moraga, Calif... Stanford finished the season ranked 50th in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Poll.
