The first day of competition at the at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. got under way today. The Cardinal got things started with a victory over Oklahoma State in the morning match.
Georgia split its matches with Georgia Southern, 2-2-1, but advanced by virtue of the tiebreaker, nine holes won to five. The Bulldogs will face eighth-seeded Tennessee, who downed Georgia State, 4-1-0. Arizona upset fourth-seeded Duke in the tiebreaker, eight holes to four, and meets Wake Forest - a 2-1-2 winner over Augusta State. Georgia Tech - the third seed - blanked Missouri. Arizona State triumphed, 3-2-0, against New Mexico. The final two matches were upsets - Coastal Carolina beat Kentucky, 2-1-2, and Stanford defeated defending tournament champion Oklahoma State, 3-2-0.
Second round play was suspended due to darkness. Play will resume at 8 a.m. with the third round scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Five men's team matches were completed with Georgia Tech and Stanford advanced to the semifinals and Georgia Southern, Augusta State and New Mexico staved off elimination.
