Men's Golf Fairs Well at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate
Kribel wins tournament
Feb. 3, 1998
TUCSON, Ariz.--Stanford junior Joel Kribel captured the individual title at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate played at the par 71, 6882 yard Raven Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz. Kribel maintained the lead he took into the final round by firing a career-best six-under-par 65. He finished the tournament with a career-best 13-under-par 200. Kribel's three round total of 200 ties the tournament record that former Arizona golfer Ted Purdy set in 1996 in beating second place Tiger Woods by four strokes. The tournament win is Kribel's first of the season and fifth of his career.
"I wouldn't put myself in the same category as Tiger just yet," said Kribel. "I am pretty sure that he has improved a lot since he was in school. I didn't have a very good fall season. To come out and do this in the first spring tournament is great."
UNLV led from start to finish and won the intercollegiate by four strokes over host and No. 1 ranked Arizona in action that wrapped up today. After entering the day with a seven shot lead over the second place Wildcats, the eighth-ranked Rebels, who placed three golfers among the top-15, fired a four-over-par 288 today, bringing their three-round total to one-under-par 851. Their score was five shots better than the UA's total of four-over-par 856. UNLV was the only team in the tournament's 20-team field that finished below par. Stanford shot a 294 in the final round, finishing in ninth place at 882.
