The Head Coach: Forty-five year old Eugene Francis "Buddy" Teevens III took over the helm of the Cardinal football program on January 9, 2002 after a 23-year coaching career, including 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach ... Teevens spent the last three seasons at Florida under Steve Spurrier as the Assistant Offensive Coordinator and tight ends coach ... He has previously held head coaching positions at the University of Maine (1985-86), Dartmouth College - his alma mater (1987-91) and Tulane (1992-96) ... Last week against Oregon State, Matter threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns ... A week earlier against USC, he set career highs for pass completions (23), pass attempts (35) and touchdown passes (two) ... He opened the game by completing his first 15 passes, two shy of the Pac-10 record ... Against Arizona (Oct. 19), Matter completed 7-of-10 for 71 yards in a relief role ... Tolon, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been impressive when given the ball ... A year ago, when injuries to the Cardinal backfield provided Tolon with an opportunity to play, he was indeed impressive as he rushed for 346 yards and three touchdowns on 54 carries (6.4 ypc) ... In his brief career, Tolon has gained 698 yards and scored six touchdowns on 116 carries while sporting an impressive 6.0 yards per carry average ... After not playing in the season opener at Boston College, Tolon rushed for 47 yards and scored two TDs on just four carries in game two vs. San Jose State ... Two-Sport Teyo: Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Teyo Johnson has earned the reputation as one of the top two sport athletes in the nation ... A power forward on Stanford's nationally-ranked basketball team the past two years, Johnson is in his second season as a receiver after coming to Stanford as one of the most highly-touted prep quarterbacks in the nation from Mira Mesa High School in the San Diego area ... Johnson was a redshirt freshman QB at Stanford in 2000, but was moved to wide receiver for the 2001 season ... At 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, the very athletic Johnson has proven to be a difficult matchup for opposing defenses ... He wound up catching 38 balls for 565 yards (14.9 ypc) and seven touchdowns in 2001 and was named the Pac-10's Co-Freshman of the Year ... He was on the Biletnikoff Award "Watch List" for the 2002 season ... He began the 2002 campaign by catching four balls for 117 yards and one TD in the season opener at Boston College ... He scored the team's first TD of the year on a seven-yard pass from Kyle Matter ... Earlier in the drive, Matter and Johnson hooked up on an 80-yard pass play, the longest reception of Johnson's career ... But a foot injury has limited Moore over the last six games, during which time he has carried just 13 times for 79 yards ... He carried the ball just three times in last week's game, although he had three receptions, including a 31-yard TD catch ... Against Oregon on Nov. 2, he carried the ball four times for 62 yards, including a 43-yarder ... Moore, who started his 43rd consecutive game against Oregon State on Saturday, has rushed for a 334 yards on 52 carries ... His 6.4 yards per carry average is among the best in the nation for a fullback ... Against Arizona State on September 28, Moore tied his career best by rushing for 116 yards on 11 carries for the second 100-yard rushing day of his career ... Some of the great Cardinal fullbacks of recent history include two who are currently playing in the NFL: Jon Ritchie for the Oakland Raiders and Greg Comella for the Tennessee Titans ... Both Ritchie and Comella played their final season at Stanford in 1997 ... Ritchie was a third round draft pick (by the Raiders) while Comella was a free agent who played for the New York Giants from 1998-2001 ... Tommy Vardell is the only fullback in school history to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft (Cleveland Browns).

Moore's Big Plays: Casey Moore has spent the past four years quietly starting 43 straight games at fullback and making big plays ... His career average of 6.1 yards per rush is testimony to his big play performance ... He has scored 16 touchdowns in his career, including TD runs from 94-, 68- and 49- yards out ... Moore has accounted for 16 plays of 18 yards or more in his career.

Moore in the Big Gam: Casey Moore has been a big player for the Cardinal in the Big Game ... Moore's Big Game numbers include 14 carries for 153 yards (10.9 average) and three touchdowns to go along with two receptions for 26 yards and one touchdown ... In 1999, Moore established a Big Game record by racing 94 yards for a touchdown - the longest run in Big Game history ... He gained 116 yards on four carries in that game ... The next year, Moore caught a 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime from Randy Fasani to give Stanford a 36-30 win.

Alex Smith: Before the 2002 campaign, sophomore Alex Smith was one of three talented tight ends who figured to give the Cardinal one of the best trios in the conference ... But, after junior Darrin Naatjes signed a pro baseball contract before fall camp began and injuries to starter Brett Pierce (suffered a season ending injury in the season opener at Boston College) and freshman Matt Traverso, Smith not only became the team's starter, but the only tight end on the roster ... And he has taken advantage of the opportunity ... Smith became the first Cardinal tight end in nine seasons to record over 100 receiving yards in a game when he caught eight passes for 120 yards and one touchdown vs. Arizona on Oct. 19 ... Smith had 12 catches for 164 yards and a TD in consecutive games against Washington State and Arizona ... A native of Denver, Colo., Smith is second on the team with 26 receptions for 339 yards (13.0 average) and two touchdowns ... His 26 cathches are the most for a Cardinal tight end since Tony Cline caught 35 in 1994 ... As a redshirt freshman in 2001, Smith played in all 11 games in a reserve role and caught one ball for 20 yards (vs. UCLA).

Luke Powell: FL/KR Luke Powell, a First-Team All-American kick returner in 2001, has earned the reputation as one of the most dangerous players in college football ... Powell, a junior from Smyrna, Tennessee, has proven to be one of those players who can score anytime he touches the ball ... He is currently second in school history with a 19.4 yards per reception average after recording 79 receptions for 1,534 yards and 11 touchdowns ... He is also No. 5 all-time at Stanford with a 11.7 average on punt returns (45 returns, 525 yards, one TD) ... He was second in the NCAA and first in the Pac-10 last season with a 16.0 punt return average ... Throughout his career, Powell has exemplified the knack for making big plays ... He has caught 16 receptions of over 30 yards, including seven over 50 ... Powell has been limited this season due to an ankle injury.

Kwame's The Name: Junior offensive tackle Kwame Harris is making his name known throughout the country as one of the top offensive linemen in college football ... Now in his third season at Stanford, Harris (6-foot-7, 308 pounds) entered the 2002 campaign as a bonafide All-America candidate and an Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award prospect ... Harris came to Stanford in 2000 as one of the nation's prized recruits from Newark High School in Delaware - and he has lived up to those expectations ... He lettered as a true freshman in 2000 and moved into the starting lineup in 2001 at right tackle, where he started all 12 games ... He was named Second-Team All-Pac-10 last season ... He entered the 2002 season on the Lombardi Award "Watch List" ... He was rated No. 16 on ESPN's list of the nation's top 100 players ... Street & Smith's Magazine named Harris the top NFL prospect in the Pacific-10 Conference in 2002 ... He has started the last 22 games for the Cardinal at right tackle.

Offensive Line: Senior Greg Schindler and junior Kirk Chambers have been steady and consistent performers for Stanford over the past three seasons ... Schindler was named Second-Team All-Pac-10 a year ago and received pre-season Second-Team All-American recognition from Street & Smith's heading into the 2002 campaign ... He has been in the Cardinal's starting lineup in 41 of the last 45 games from 1999-2002 ... Chambers is a 23-year old junior who has started all 33 games at left tackle since returning from a Mormon Mission in 2000 ... He was an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 pick last year ... Carter Among All-Time Rushers: Senior running back Kerry Carter became the seventh player in Stanford history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a career after his performance last week against Oregon State ... Carter gained 80 yards on 20 carries last week, boosting his career total to 2,005 yards ... He needs 112 yards to catch Brian Allen (1998-2001) for sixth on the school's all-time list ... Carter passed Ray Handley (1963-65) with 1,768 yards and Tommy Vardell (1988-91) with 1,789 career rushing yards in the Oct. 26 game at UCLA ... Carter currently leads the team in rushing with 490 yards on a team-leading 137 carries ... In his last five games (Arizona, UCLA, Oregon, USC, Oregon State), Carter has had a team-leading 99 carries - an average of 20 carries per game ... Carter rushed for 330 yards and six TDs as true freshman in 1999, then followed that up with a team-leading 729 yards on 179 carries in 2000 ... Carter Among Top TD Makers: Kerry Carter is also among the best in school history in touchdowns and rushing touchdowns ... Carter ranks fourth in Cardinal history in rushing touchdowns and seventh in total touchdowns ... Wells Breatks KOR Records: Senior Ryan Wells, who had four kickoff returns for 75 yards in last week's game with Oregon State, is about to become the most prolific kickoff return specialist in school history ... He broke two school records against the Beavers last Saturday for season kickoff return yards and season kickoff returns ... Wells has 32 KOR for 635 yards this season, both school records (previous records were 29 KOR for 603 yards set in 1980 by Vincent White) ...Wells has 1,930 career kickoff return yards and trails the school record by only 20 (1,950 by Damon Dunn, 1994-96) ... He previously established the school record for most career kickoff returns with 87 (previous record 73 by Dunn) ... Wells is eighth on the school's career kickoff return average chart at 22.2 yards per return

Strong Safety: A year ago as a redshirt freshman, Oshiomogho Atogwe played on special teams, recorded four total tackles, and waited his turn ... And now, in 2002, the sophomore from Windsor, Ontario, Canada is an integral part of the Cardinal defense ... Atogwe has become perhaps the most active defensive player on the team ...He is tied for the team lead with 65 total tackles and he leads the team with three interceptions and three forced fumbles ...
