STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal under second-year head coach Jim Harbaugh will open its 2008 preseason football practice on Friday, August 1 with a helmet-only workout at Elliot Field beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Stanford's first practice in full pads will be on Tuesday, August 5, while the first of four two-a-day workouts commence on August 7.

Stanford returns 20 starters (9 offense/11 defense) and 43 letterwinners (24 offense/18 defense/one specialist) from last year's team that finished with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-6 mark in the Pac-10 Conference. Included among last year's win total were signature victories over top-ranked USC (USA Today) and defending Pacific-10 Conference co-champion California. Two of Cardinal's six losses were by a touchdown or less.

Stanford opens the 2008 regular season on August 28 against Oregon State at Stanford Stadium. Other home dates are scheduled against San Jose State (Sept. 20), Arizona (Oct. 11--Homecoming), Washington State (Nov. 1) and USC (Nov. 15) with road contests slated for Arizona State (Sept. 6), Texas Christian (Sept. 13), Washington (Sept. 27), Notre Dame (Oct. 4), UCLA (Oct. 18), Oregon (Nov. 8) and California (Nov. 22).
