Past And Present Stanford Rowers Earn 13 Medals At USRowing National Championships

Stanford Rowing was once again a big winner on the national stage over the weekend, this time at the USRowing National Championships in West Windsor, N.J. as Cardinal alumni took home 13 medals. Of the haul, three were gold, six silver, and four bronze.

Stanford's men's I Eight and Lightweight Eight boats each made the medal stand on Saturday's final day of competition at the IRA Championships at Lake Natoma, claiming bronze medals and third-place national finishes in their respective Grand Finals. The finish matches the lightweight boat's highest-ever national finish, set last year, and for the second-ranked men's I Eight, it improved two spots from last year's fifth-place national finish.

Day two of the 2009 IRA Championships at Lake Natoma saw the No. 2 Stanford men's I Eight and the Lightweight Eight keep their national-title hopes alive by advancing to Saturday's Grand Final during Friday's competition. In other competition, the men's II Eight and Frosh Eight boats took second and third place, respectively, in their repechage races and will now participate in Saturday's petite finals.

Stanford's second-ranked men's I Eight needed just one heat Thursday at the IRA Championships at Lake Natoma to advance to Friday's semifinals, claiming victory in a time of 5:58.30. Stanford's two other men's boats, the II Eight and Frosh Eight, each took third in their respective heats, but will each have to head to Friday's repechage to get into the semifinals, as only the winner of the II Eight and Frosh Eight heats qualified for the semifinals.

Murphy Named Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Toyo Tires
Following the Stanford women claiming both the team and I Eight national championships last weekend, the Stanford men and lightweights will look to make some history of their own this weekend as they take to the waters of Lake Natoma for the 107th edition of the IRA Championships, set for June 4-6.

Stanford rowing dominated the individual Pac-10 rowing honors Wednesday, as the conference announced that Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, while senior Alex Osborne and sophomore Erika Roddy took home the conference's Men's and Women's Athlete of the Year awards, respectively.
