Newport Autumn Rowing Festival Results
NEWPORT HARBOR, Calif. - The Stanford oarsmen traveled south to Newport Harbor over the weekend and returned home with a pair of medals won at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. The I Eight claimed the silver medal in the Men's Open Eight event, while the men's four boat took home bronze in a very competitive Open Four field.
"Newport Harbor was calm, fast and fair today," said Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "Our men did extremely well in the Open fours race finishing within three seconds of first. The open eight result (15 seconds back) is something we can use to motivate us throughout the mid-winter training cycle that begins soon. Cal is the early number one in men's collegiate rowing after winning the Head of the Charles two weeks ago. We will train with clear goals of gaining fitness, length and speed as we prepare for our 2,000-meter sprint season."
The I Eight crossed the line with a time of 13:55.555 in the Open Eight competition, finishing 15 seconds back of the winning time of 13:40.057 turned in by the California "A" boat. The Cardinal, though, did clear the field in winning its silver medal, finishing eight seconds ahead of the third-place California "B" boat.
In the Open Fours event, a tight finish saw the Cardinal "A" boat take third, just over three seconds behind the gold medal-winning California "B" crew with a time of 15:50.947. The Cardinal just missed the silver medal by 0.585 of a second, as well.
Three other Stanford boats were entered in the race, with the "C" boat taking fourth, the "B" boat claiming fifth and the "D" boat crossing the line seventh.
