GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Stanford Freshman Men's Rowing team finished third in the Collegiate Novice 8+ at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif. This was the first time that the rowers had a chance to race as Cardinal oarsmen.

The race took place over 5,000 meters on the American River where Stanford clocked a 16:18 to trail two entries from California that finished the course in 15:58 and 16:13, respectively.

"Today was a good opportunity for our guys," commented freshman coach Pete Giese. "The guys got out there and raced hard. Clearly we still have work to do, but there were some segments of the race that we can build on".

The team will be in action again next weekend at the Newport Fall Regatta in Newport Beach, Calif. The freshman and varsity squads will be racing.
