Cherry Hill, NJ -
The Cardinal completed a successful day one at the
IRA Regatta with two boats advancing directly to Friday semifinals and two
boats entering Friday repechage racing.
"I am pleased with the way our athletes responded to challenges both on and
off the water," said assistant coach Jon Allbin. "We will strive to race faster as the regatta continues."
In the first race of the day, the Varsity 4 established a powerful, long
rhythm and won convincingly. For the three oarsmen who learned to row at
the collegiate level, it was another chance for expansion and growth.
In the second race of the day, the Freshmen 4 looked to have a strong
performance. The Cardinal raced with great composure after being down for
1400 meters of the race and were able to overtake a strong Oregon St. crew.
In the third race of the day, the Varsity 4 without was not able to find a
rhythm in their first race ever but look to regroup and challenge for
contention through the repechage on Friday.
In what was originally scheduled as the very first race of the day at 7
AM(due to racecourse buoy straightening, the regatta officials moved the
pair event to the mid-day lunch break), the Varsity 2 finally got underway
at 1 pm. The racing proved exciting, as Stanford and Cal settled into their
respective rhythms and moved away from the field. The Cardinal finished a
solid second.
The Cardinal will continue the IRA progression on Friday.
